Diagnostic Services

Ultrasound, X-Ray, Blood work, EKG, Other

We have some of the most advanced veterinary medicine technology available in our practice. The use of advanced technology greatly improves our opportunity to accurately and rapidly diagnose animal health problems. Having such high technology equipment also greatly reduces the need for expensive referrals to specialists such as the University of Georgia.

Ultrasound

We have one of the few mobile ultrasound units in Middle Georgia.

Ultrasound is one of the most advanced, non-invasive diagnostic techniques available to veterinarians. Although ultrasound has been used for many years in human medicine, it has only recently become more available in veterinary medicine.

The ultrasound unit is available for both small and large animal diagnostic medicine. Specific uses include:

Small Animal Medicine

Pregnancy checks.

Non-invasive diagnosis of soft tissue problems, including heart disease, cancer and bladder stones.

Exotic Animal Medicine

Diagnosing adrenal and pancreatic tumors in ferrets.

Diagnosing tumors and abscesses in reptiles

Large Animal Medicine

Pregnancy checks in horses and cattle.

Examination of injuries. Ultrasound examination is an essential diagnosis tool to assess tendon damage in horses. This needs to be done as soon as possible, making a portable ultrasound indispensable.

X-Ray

X-Ray is an established diagnostic technique, which has been used for many years in veterinary medicine.

We have high quality in-house x-ray equipment, including an automatic developer, to rapidly and accurately diagnose medical problems, including:

bullet

Broken bones

bullet

Obstructions to gastro-intestinal system (e.g. a puppy who has swallowed a roll of nickels!)

bullet

Some soft tissue diagnosis including: Pulmonary (lung) problems, including pneumothorax and cancer, Cardiac (heart) problems, including oversized heart, etc.

Blood Work

An essential part of human or veterinary diagnosis is running comprehensive blood work.

On site automated blood testing is essential to a rapid and accurate diagnosis.

Running comprehensive blood tests is an integral part of good veterinary medicine, principal uses include:

bullet

Screening for metabolic disorders

bullet

Pre surgery work up, to ensure the safety of the patient under anesthesia

bullet

Geriatric small animal medicine requires yearly blood tests to monitor kidney, liver, thyroid, and blood glucose levels.

bullet

Many medications cannot be safely dispensed unless specific blood tests have been run.

We have five fully automated and computerized on site machines:

CBC Analyzer, Blood Chemistry Analyzer, Thyroid Analyzer, Cortisol Analyzer and Electrolyte Analyzer.

Other essential blood chemistry screens also include tests for diabetes and other diseases.

ECG / EKG and Vital Signs Monitor
