Introduction to Laser Surgery

Laser surgery is one of the most important advances in veterinary surgical procedures for many years. Essentially the surgery is performed using a laser beam to dissect tissue rather than a conventional scalpel.

Laser equipment has been used several years in human medicine as they are very accurate. Lasers have recently moved into veterinary medicine, and we are happy to be one of the first practices in Middle Georgia to offer Laser Surgery to our clients.

We have a specialized laser, designed specifically for veterinary surgery (not equipment designed for human use and adapted), so you can be certain we have the best equipment available to treat your pets.

Advantages of Laser Surgery

Using a laser has many advantages over conventional techniques:

bullet

More rapid recovery from surgery

bullet

Reduced pain (nerves are cauterized by the laser)

bullet

Reduced bleeding (blood vessels are cauterized by the laser)

bullet

Improved dissection and removal of abnormal growths such as cancers and lumps

bullet

Surgical procedures are often faster due to the laser, minimizing the duration of the surgery and reducing the risk to the patient

Uses of Laser Surgery

The most common procedures which benefit from laser surgical techniques are:

bullet

Mass removals, including cancers and abnormal growths

bullet

Spay and neuter surgeries

bullet

Biopsies

bullet

Feline de-claw (front only, we will not de-claw back feet for the cat's safety)

Pictures of Laser Surgery

The following pictures show a mass removal on the eye lid of a Great Dane, Zeus, being performed by Dr. Gadd. The surgery was very delicate, and the laser allowed Dr. Gadd to completely remove the mass in a very awkward and delicate area. Removing this mass with conventional techniques would have been much more difficult and much harder on the patient.

The mass to be removed:

As you can see less than 24 hours later Zeus shows virtually no signs of the operation!
